The detection of chemicals is an extremely useful capability to have. In urban environments, this detection capability could serve as an indicator of pollution levels, presence of gas leaks and other hydrocarbons to name a few. In hostile environments, chemical detection is useful to increase the awareness of soldiers to their locale, and provide feedback to enable them to invoke a course of action. To this end, advanced sensor technologies are investigated for the accurate and sensitive detection of chemicals. This technology will eventually be applied to the remote sensing of chemicals of interest, and can be directly applied to the aforementioned scenarios.
