Course Description
This short course explains how Systems and Statistical thinking can improve operational efficiency and effectiveness in today’s complex and changing environments. Various examples and interactive discussions will be used to illustrate how insightful and competitive solutions can result from such thinking processes, overcoming possible wastes and shortcomings of the single-subject, deterministic approach commonly seen in conventional education curricula.
Learning Objectives
This short course aims at imparting to the participants important concepts and tools of Systems and Statistical thinking useful to decision-making at various operational levels.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, participants will be aware of more productive approaches to analyzing and solving real-world problems or designing new systems, and would be able to handle situations in their respective areas of work with fresh perspectives.

Instructor’s Profile
Prof. GOH Thong Ngee is Professor of Industrial Systems Engineering and Management at the National University of Singapore. He obtained his BE from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada and PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prof. Goh is the inaugural recipient of the International Academy for Quality (IAQ) Masing Book Prize for co-authoring the book: Six Sigma: Advanced Tools for Black Belts and Master Black Belts (John Wiley) and recipient of the Eugene Grant Medal of the American Society for Quality (ASQ). He has served variously as advisory board member, external examiner or reviewer for universities and research agencies in Asia, Europe, North America and Australia. A registered professional engineer and a GE-certified Six Sigma trainer, Prof. Goh is a former board member of the Singapore Productivity Board and of the Defence Science and Technology Agency. With three decades’ track record in teaching, research as well as consulting and training in a wide spectrum of organizations, he is a frequent invited speaker at professional conferences and corporate meetings.
